Do I believe that Michael possesses the skills to survive in a hostile environment? Let's put it this way. No, I do not. - Dwight Shrute
Survival Mode
10 Fantasy Football teams compete for bragging rights and unofficial glory in our new survival mode. Yeah, that's what I was going for.
We're 4 weeks into the season and it's finally time for me to unveil my plan to make this blog interesting for the rest of the season. Each week, the lowest scoring team is brutally murdered eliminated until only one remains at the end of our regular season in week 13. Whether you're undefeated this week or in the pack of 1-3 teams at the bottom, everyone has a chance to claim glory in the survival challenge and get your team name etched into a golden chalice written in HTML in this page's header.
Our teams have just reached the island or race or whatever. Who will be the first to fall?
League Power Rankings
- S Tier
- Cool Beans: Still in another stratosphere from the rest of the league, Cool Beans currently has the #1 WR (Thomas) the #1 RB (Kamara) and a consistently great QB in Cam Newton who has already passed his bye. Depth RB issues have largely been solved by the emergence of Hyde as a great RB in Cleveland
- A Tier
- Return of the Mack: Don't let Mack's 2-2 record fool you, this team is crazy good. Zeke is carrying the Cowboys offense, the bears are the #1 Fantasy defense, and Golden Tate is surprisingly a top 10 WR. Oh yeah, and he just picked up starting NE RB Michel off waivers.
- Wampus Cats : If it's possible to win purely on RB talent, Wampus Cats are going to do it this season. Gordon/Hunt have been an insane duo through 4 weeks, and Ingram is finally back from suspension to round out the core. Both Tyreek and Hilton outperforming their ADP has allowed this team to cover the fact that the it didn't draft many high profile WRs.
- B Tier
- Eagle Powers: Good starting WRs, great RB depth and 2 QBs who can tear up any defense highlight Eagle Powers' squad. The problem? Picking starters. Choosing between Freeman/Cook/Conner/Peterson has turned out to be a difficult decision that has cost him a couple of wins this year.
- Goofy Gang: This team has also been weighed down by start decisions, but primarily at the QB position. The rest of the team, however, is very solid. Gronk is still the best TE in the league when healthy, and pickups of Ekeler, Cohen, and Aaron Jones have rounded out his RB weaknesses.
- Represent 👩🏈🌻: This team's placement at the bottom of the B tier is primarily a product of RB underperformance. David Johnson isn't bad but he's also not putting up top 3 numbers. The same can be said of Alex Collins. Thielen starting the year as the #2 WR has been a huge boon for this team, and Kittle is also emerging as a great fantasy TE.
- C Tier
- Dakstreet Boys: JuJu is balling out, McCaffrey is becoming a matchup proof fantasy stud, and Marshawn is... still around doing Marshawn stuff. The problem? #1 QB pick Aaron Rodgers isn't producing this year as he currently trails 3 QBs who aren't even owned in our league (Bortles, Trubiski, Flacco). That's a lot of draft capital to invest in a replacement level player.
- zane's Team: This squad has the best WRs in the league by a longshot, and a great TE in Ertz, but the RB situation is a mess. Henry is stuck in an unproductive committee with Dion Lewis, and Chris Thompson seems to have come back to earth as a less reliable Karama-lite. Carson winning the starting job in Seattle would go a long way to resolve this problem.
- D Tier
- Greg's Grand Team: Injuries to Mixon, Fournette, and Jeffrey have derailed what should have been a pretty good team to start the season. With 2 of the 3 back this week, it's time for this team to prove it can compete with the upper tiers. Getting Boyd, Ridley, and Lindsay off waivers have provided the depth this team needs, and now it's up to the starters to get things going.
- Steven's Team: Much like GGT, this team has been devastated by injury. If Baldwin and Freeman can get healthy and back to form there's still time for this team to improve. If the rumors about Leveon's week 8 return are true, you still get half a season of the best RB in football. Until then, this team lacks a elite level player who can go out and win them a week.
Matchups
Alright, so I was planning to skip matchups in this week's writeup. Yahoo already does them and they have lots of cool stats and graphs. It's hard to keep up. However, I have to talk about the fact that we had not 1, but 2 matchups decided by 1 point and they both had the same scores
Greg's Grand Team (139.76) > Represent 👩🏈🌻 (138.62)
In a must win game to prevent GGT from starting 0-4 he got just enough to squeak by Represent in her highest scoring game of the season. He can thank the Falcons and Bengals for putting on a show as both Ridley and Gio notched 2 TDs. The packers shutting out the miserable Bills didn't hurt either. Represent almost came back during the Baltimore game as Tucker kicked 4 2nd half field goals, but a Alex Collins fumble at the goal line left her just short. Thielen and Kittle both dominated their positions this week.
Return of the Mack (139.46) > zane's Team (138.56)
In our other razor thin matchup, zane's Team started in a pit on Thursday night as the Rams shredded the Vikings once great defense to net him -3 points. Huge games from his WRs: Hopkins, Shephard, and Julio brought his team back to life on Sunday, but ultimately Zeke's 260+ total yards combined with Golden Tate in the Dallas/Lions game to put this matchup just out of reach.
Pickup of The Week
This one goes to Return of the Mack for snagging Michel after Burkhead was placed on IR. It's usually a tossup what NE will do with their RBs any given week, but now that they're down to 2 Michel should be a good bet for major carries every week.
