Week 3: Q1 Stats and Surprises

Well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, would you look at that? The cannon has been fired in DKR Memorial Stadium, signaling that we're 1/4 of our way through the season.

It's a nice time to look back at our draft, our teams, and league records, and see where things are headed. I want to get this out of the way at the top: if you're 0-3 after this week, don't give up hope. You only need to climb to 6th place (currently a 1-2 record) over the next 10 weeks to make playoffs, and anything can happen from there.

The next segment of this blog post contains stats, and they are numbers

Interesting Stats Through Week 3

  • Drew Brees has now thrown 40 footballs at Michael Thomas. He has turned that into 398 yards and 3 TDs, which is pretty good. The crazy part? He has caught 38 of those passes for an insane 95% catch rate
  • After joining fellow Alabama alum Julio Jones in Atlanta, Calvin Ridley has more TDs in 2 games (4) than Julio caught for the entire 2017 season (3).
  • Ryan Fitzpatrick and Pat Mahomes both broke NFL records this week. Fitz became the first QB to ever throw for 400 yards in 3 straight games, while Mahomes broke Manning's record by starting the season with 13 TDs in 3 weeks.
  • Excluding Wentz (who was drafted injured) GOAT QB Tom Brady is the lowest scoring QB owned in our league. Andrew Luck is only 1 spot behind him. Coincidentally, the teams that own these guys are both 0-3...
  • Alvin Kamara is the #1 RB in our league despite averaging less than 50 rushing yards a game. It would be pretty crazy if someone drafted Kamara and Michael Thomas huh?🙄
  • The LA Chargers defense is averaging 2 points/week but is somehow owned in our league.

League Power Rankings

3 weeks in, we can start to get a picture of who the good teams are and who's struggling to compete. This will probably change a lot over the season
  • Tier 1, Cool Beans: This tier is named for it's only occupant because right now Colton's team is on another level compared to the rest of the league. Hilariously he also has the least points scored against him, giving his team an average margin of victory of 50 points.
  • Tier 2, Playoff Contenders: Wampus Cats, zane's Team, Goofy Gang, Return of the Mack, Dakstreet Boys. Despite 2 of these teams having 1-2 records, they're all putting up consistent points and have relatively healthy rosters.
  • Tier 3, On The Bubble: Represent, Steven's Team. These are teams that I can see pushing into the playoff picture pretty easily if their team starts clicking or someone above them falls. Both have very high draft picks (Lev Bell, David Johnson) that are not living up to their billing at the moment.
  • Tier 4, DANGER ZONE: Eagle Powers, Greg's Grand Team. These teams both have multiple injured starters, and are putting up disappointing score totals so far. However, they have also both faced Cool Beans and Wampus Cats to start the season, and have easier schedules ahead.

Mini Recap

  • Cool Beans destroys Goofy Gang. Goofy Gang picks the wrong QB two weeks in a row but it turns out to not matter. This was not close. None of Cool Beans' matchups have been.
  • Represent 👩🏈🌻gets their first win of the season vs Eagle Powers and avoids the 0-3 start. Eagle Powers does not. TE and Kicker positions decided this one. Who knew the Vikings would disappear vs the Bills?
  • Wampus Cats pulls away from Greg's Grand Team late because I guess Tom Brady is old now. The 20 point margin of victory can be entirely accounted for by the gap in scoring between Brady and Fitzmagic.
  • Steven's Team gets a very important win over zane's Team thanks to the Fitzpatrick/Mike Evans connection. Deshaun Watson shows up finally and keeps things even with Mahomes.
  • In the only close matchup, Dakstreet Boys edges out Return of the Mack on Monday night. Big Ben puts up 25 points but that's not very helpful when your opponent is starting JuJu and Antonio Brown.
Oh yeah, I guess I'm giving myself pickup of the week for Fitzpatrick. GGT getting Gio off waivers for 17 points was also a good grab.

Kickoff 2019

Football Season is Upon us.. Man, that feels really nice to type. We're just weeks away from finding out Are the browns actually good now? Will the entire Cowboys offense hold out for better contracts? Can Antonio Brown recover from his frostbitten feet (seriously?) Who's going to dominate our draft only to watch their team fall apart in the final weeks of the season? There are two important parts to this post, and both of them require your participation; draft dates and rule changes. If nothing else, please send me your draft dates ASAP Draft Dates In order to avoid drafting players who get injured in the preseason, I've set the earliest date for this poll after Preseason Week 2. Check all the dates you're available, or at least X out the days you definitely can't make it. VOTE HERE Potential Rule Changes Alright, now for the rules. First, I want to note that we don't have to change anything from last year, but I always like ...

Week 13: Playoffs, Survivor Champion

A rare image of that one time the Jags were actually good Playoffs are here! The final week of the regular season included a bit of Chaos as Goofy Gang was able to claw his way into 6th place, while NB Power pushed into a 1st round bye. This next week, there are only 2 matchups because all of our losers bracket teams are on bye, as well as our league leaders. Survivor The winner of our very first survivor challenge has been crowned! Congrats Eagle Powers. The key to this game was consistency, and Eagle Powers has been consistently crushing it ever since this challenge started in week 5. With an average score of 139 and low of 113 during that period, this team has cruised to 4 eliminations (double that of the next best team) on the backs of Gurley, Luck, and Davante Adams, as well as insane waiver pickups in Conner, Chubb and Kerryon. How they're only 7-6 in the actual standings is the greater mystery. Survivor Standings : Eagle Powers: 132 Points this week ⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️ ...

Commish Commentary Week 9: Close Calls

Sometimes, Fantasy Football is about winning the draft, or getting that breakout player on waivers. Like drafting Hunt in the 7th or getting Wentz for free. Other times, it's about picking the right players to start and which ones to sit. Like when Amari Cooper puts up 40 points on your bench as you lose by 5. Sometimes though, it's just dumb luck. There were two teams this week that were ~1 point away from winning their matchup and moving into playoff position only to lose at the last possible second. 1 dropped pass that gets caught, one field-goal that goes in instead of bouncing off the upright. So close, but not quite close enough. Recaps! Travis Kelce Chunky Salsa (85) > 🤓🖒🏈 (83.24) In the first of our nail-biters, 🤓🖒🏈 took a lead Sunday with good games from Ajayi and McCaffrey, only for Chunky Salsa to be saved on Monday night by a Kelce touchdown. Salsa also got a pretty good game out of Tyrod and Hopkins, which helped gloss over an abysmal 8 carr...
