Commish Commentary Week 13: Playoff Morning

We're finally here, Fantasy Playoffs. In 3 short weeks we'll have our first champion, and 9 other people thinking "if only I hadn't dropped that WR" or "If I had just played my starting lineup in..". But today there are only two matchups, as the 1 and 2 seeds are on bye, and the whole loser bracket has the week off.

So with that in mind, I'm going to preview our playoff matchups (although I realize a few players played on Thursday) and then give you guys my top pickups of the season in all the skill positions.

Colton's Team vs 🤓🖒🏈

What a crazy season for Colton's team. After starting the season 0-3, he has managed to win 4 of the last 5 weeks, jumping all the way into 3rd place for a first round matchup with his wife. He can thank a huge breakout season from Kamara and a late resurgence from Marvin Jones Jr. for making this comeback a reality. For 🤓🖒🏈 it's been a bit more of an up and down season, but she has also managed 3 wins in the final 4 weeks to fight her way into the playoff standings. She'll be looking for another big week from stars AJ Green and McCaffrey to carry her in this matchup.

Unfortunately for Colton, Kamara left Thursday's game with a concussion in the 1st quarter, erasing what was originally a 14 point lead in projections and making this one really close. 

Commish Pick-Em: I think Colton's team still takes this one, but it's tough. I like the Alex Smith matchup vs OAK more than River's vs WAS, and I'm a bit suspicious of the Eagles DEF vs a very good offense in the Rams. Everything else is so close now that I'm hinging my pick on these 2 games.

Perezoso Majestuoso vs Chunky Salsa

Perezoso has to have the biggest "what if" team in our league this season. He has been the most active player in the league with 40 transactions, in no small part due to the fact that he seemingly loses another RB for the season every other week (Chris Carson, Aaron Jones, Rob Kelley, Bilal Powell). Despite all this, he's still in position to win it all if he can survive an abysmal performance from Matt Ryan on Thursday. For Chunky Salsa, it has been sort of a weird year. After starting out the year in 1st and miles ahead in points, he ends up in 5th after failing to break 100 points for the final 5 weeks of the season.

Commish Pick-Em: It feels weird to make predictions on a game I'm in, but I feel like the Falcons game on Thursday gave me the shot I need to survive in the playoffs. My gut tells me that this one all comes down to RBs, as all 6 starting RBs between these teams have the potential to put up 30+ point games.

Pickups of the Season

One of my favorite things to write this year has been pickup of the week, because regardless of who wins the games, it's fun to see who made good calls on the waivers every Tuesday. With that in mind, here are my game changing moves of the season.

QB1: Carson Wentz. Wentz was picked up initially by Greg's Grand Team, surprisingly dropped, and then scooped up by 🤦‍♀️💆‍♀️🧖‍♀️ before going on to be the #2 QB in fantasy on the year. Leading the league with 29 passing TDs and only 6 INTs, he has real potential to lead his team to a real life super bowl after our championships are finished.

QB2: Josh McCown. When this season started, many analysts thought the Jets would be lucky to win 1 game this season. Apparently they didn't count on McCown becoming QB #8 and leading Colton's Team to the playoffs. Honestly, I'm still not sure I believe it.

RB1: Alvin Kamara. Despite starting the season with games of 3 and 5 points, undrafted (in Fantasy) Kamara sky-rocketed to the #3 overall RB on the season, making this pick for Colton's team potentially the best of the year.

RB2: Chris Thompson. The fact that this pick is going to a player on IR tells you just how difficult it is to find RB talent on waivers. Thompson hasn't played at all in 3 weeks, and he's still the RB #14 in fantasy scoring, becoming seemingly the best RB and WR for the Washington Redskins after 🤓🖒🏈 picked him up early this season.

WR1: Marvin Jones Jr. Whoever dropped this guy after his slow start has to be kicking themselves after watching Colton pick him up as his weekly scoring has gone crazy. Jones Jr. didn't break 10 points until week 6, but ends the year as WR#7. (p.s. : it was me. I drafted and dropped him)

WR2: Adam Theilen. Only 2 points behind Marvin is 🤦‍♀️💆‍♀️🧖‍♀️ 's second breakout of the year. Theilen started strong against the Saints in week one, and put up great numbers for her team all season ending as WR#8 on a Vikings team that's also pushing for a super bowl.

TE: Evan Engram. How do you go from 0-3 to 3rd in the league? Apparently the answer is picking up the best players in every category, as Colton managed to steal the #5 TE off of waivers in addition to Kamara, McCown, and Jones Jr. Engram finished week 13 with 6 TDs and 569 yards in a year where the Giants have had almost no other offensive weapons.

And there you have it. If you didn't seen your name in the list this season, take that as a tiny bit of incentive to watch the waiver wire like a hawk next time. Or just blame Colton. That's probably what I'm going to do.
